Linux is an operating system for computers, also known as the OS (Operating System). Other well-known OS-es include Microsoft Windows and Mac OS. Linux is open source software, meaning that the software can be freely downloaded and used. Even modifying or adapting the software is free, as long as it is freely shared.

Linux works on many different systems. From very old computers to the latest generation. Mobile devices also use Linux as a basis, just think of Android, which currently has an estimated market share of more than 80%.

Linux is also used more and more on servers, some examples of large companies using Linux are Google and IBM. These large companies choose Linux because of its reliability.

Linux is distributed in the form of Linux distributions, called distros.

Some well-known distributions are Ubuntu, Fedora, Mint, Suse, Red Hat, … and quite a few others. Ubuntu is by far the most widely distributed and you can easily find help online for all your questions. Linux Ubuntu is completely free to download and use.

A Linux distribution comes with a great choice of programmes such as Word processors, Web browsers, Youtube, Spotify, Whatsapp …. you name it.

Advantages:

• Linux is mostly free to download. Only certain distros charge a small fee.
• Linux is growing very fast, programmers around the world work to make it a little better with every version back.
• It is stable, secure and reliable!
• It is user-friendly. Installing a distribution, including indispensable applications like word processors or webbrowsers is really easy.
• Any security issues are quickly discovered and fixed via updates.
• Using Linux is free, so you never have a problem with illegal licences. Also you are not dependent on any particular manufacturer.

Disadvantages:

• Linux is not exactly like your trusted software. It might take some time to get used to it. But once you master Linux, you will only experience the advantages.
• Only a few manufacturers supply hardware with Linux by default, they are gradually increasing in number though.
• Some hardware is not fully compatible with Linux. In case of problems, however, solutions are found quickly.
• Certain file extensions are more difficult to support.
