In our webshop, we have made the entire ordering process as simple as possible: after selecting a laptop type, you can choose the amount of RAM, the size of the SSD and the desired Open Source operating system as you wish, allowing you to customise the laptop (almost entirely) according to your needs.
The laptop you’ll receive after ordering, is completely ready to work with: Just start it up and you are ready tot go to work. Even the desired software is installed.
As you can see: It doesn’t get much simpler!
Light use.
For internet browsing, e-mailing and the occasional document typing, almost any laptop will do. So you don’t necessarily need a powerhouse for this kind of work, but it is nice if the laptop does have fast storage (SSD) and sufficient memory (RAM).
At GetFOSS, we only supply laptops and desktops with SSDs and you are free to choose the amount of RAM.
To stay lander with the same hardware, it is recommended not to skimp on it.
For professional laptop use (think work and school use), it is better to opt for a laptop that can do a bit more than a basic laptop, so that everything goes just a bit smoother. We then recommend a laptop with at least a Core i5 or Ryzen 5 processor (spreadsheet programmes in particular benefit from a faster processor), 8GB of working memory and an SSD with at least 256GB of storage.
Keep the above specifications for business use or for a good student laptop.
Gaming & video editing
Laptops for gamers are a separate category. Playing the latest games requires a lot of processing power. Some manufacturers offer special gaming laptops for this purpose. These are often a bit thicker and heavier and they usually look more playful than regular laptops.
These laptops are real beasts and often have a considerable price tag of at least €1000. Do you want to be able to run all the graphics-intensive games without compromising anything? Then even that won’t suffice.
Video card
The most important thing about a gaming laptop is the video card. That component largely determines how smoothly you can game. Most laptop video cards are made by Nvidia, which introduced the RTX 30 series in 2020.
You can roughly tell by the type numbers how powerful the cards are and compare them to each other. For example, the RTX 3080 is faster than the RTX 3060, and the RTX 3060 is again faster than the GTX 16 series. For gaming on a tight budget, we recommend at least a GTX 1650 or an RTX 3050. If you have a bit more to spend, then an RTX 3060, 3060 Ti or 3070 is definitely worth the investment.
Video editing
For video editing, a good video card is less important, for which the requirements are slightly different. A fast processor is the most important thing for video editing. So opt for an Intel Core i7, AMD Ryzen 7 or MacBook with M1 Pro/Max.
Travel
Staying in touch with the home front is nice for backpackers and anyone who travels for long periods of time. For example, via Skype or Facetime. Because you carry your laptop with you a lot, size, weight and battery play an important role.
Laptops are already made for carrying, of course. But a large 15- or 17-inch machine is actually not very suitable for that. It takes up too much space. Not only in your bag, but also in a plane seat, working with a 15″ is not pleasant.
Check size and battery life
A compact laptop is easier to carry. So rather look for a screen size of 11 to 14 inches. Battery life is also very important. On the road, you do not have sockets everywhere, so it is handy if the battery lasts a long time.
All in all, a compact, lightweight laptop with good battery life is recommended for travellers. Speed and screen quality are less important. Although we do recommend a laptop with a matte screen. With this, you will suffer much less from reflections on the screen. Fortunately, there are plenty of laptops that meet these criteria.
